چکیده

The objective of this paper is to examine the long-run Purchasing Power Parity hypothesis in a dynamic panel of twenty OECD countries, using recently developed heterogeneous panel cointegration tests that have not been previously applied to PPP. Another contribution is that we investigate the symmetry and proportionality conditions in PPP using likelihood-based inference as suggested by Johansen (1995), but with likelihood ratio tests extended to a panel context. We find empirical support for long-run PPP, with the assumptions of symmetry and proportionality being strongly rejected.

Purchasing Power Parity in economies in transition: evidence fr

The present paper tests for the validity of long-run purchasing power parity (PPP) for seventeen European economies in transition. Analysis is performed following the methodological suggestions expressed in recent studies for PPP. Longrun PPP is initially tested for each economy vis-a-vis the US, using the Johansen cointegration methodology and then for the whole set of countries using the Lars...

Efficient Estimation of the SUR Cointegration Regression Model and Testing for Purchasing Power Parity∗

This paper studies the efficient estimation of seemingly unrelated linear models with integrated regressors and stationary errors. We consider two cases. The first one has no common regressor among the equations. In this case, we show that by adding leads and lags of the first differences of the regressors and estimating this augmented dynamic regression model by generalized least squares using...

Cross-Sectional Correlation Robust Tests for Panel Cointegration

We use meta analytic combination procedures to develop new tests for panel cointegration. The main idea consists in combining p-values from time series cointegration tests on the different units of the panel. The tests are robust to heterogeneity as well as to cross-sectional dependence between the different units of the panel. To achieve the latter, we employ a sieve bootstrap procedure with j...

Simple Tests for Cointegration in Dependent Panels with Structural Breaks∗

This paper develops two very simple tests for the null hypothesis of no cointegration in panel data. The tests are general enough to allow for heteroskedastic and serially correlated errors, unit specific time trends, cross-sectional dependence and an unknown structural break in both the intercept and slope of the cointegrated regression, which may be located at different dates for different un...
